An unfinished demolition: how to ask another contractor to assess it

When work stops partway through, a replacement contractor needs the condition that exists now. The original demolition list may include completed work, partly removed assemblies and decisions that have since changed. Describe those differences before requesting completion of the old package.

Separate the reason for the handover from the remaining work

A planned contractor change, a revised design and an unresolved site condition need different conversations. Explain which applies without asking the new contractor to decide blame, contract liability or warranty responsibility. If a safety or material concern stopped the work, its professional review remains a dependency.

Do not enter an uncertain work area to produce better photographs. Use information already available and ask what assessment is appropriate.

Sort the premises by physical condition

ConditionUseful information for assessment
Untouched areaCurrent drawing and the removals still proposed
Partly removed assemblyWhat has already left and what remains connected
Exposed retained areaWho has reviewed its condition and any temporary arrangements
Loose debrisKnown material, location and whether its handling is confirmed

The project lead should reconcile these observations with the latest design and the appropriate professionals’ instructions. Old access or service arrangements should not be assumed current.

An illustrative office takeover

Suppose partitions in one room are gone, a fixed reception counter remains and flooring has only been removed in part of a corridor. The new package can identify the counter, the assessed remaining floor area and the known debris separately. It should also name the retained meeting rooms and any unfinished edges awaiting the fit-out contractor.

That is a clearer request than finish the strip-out. A change to the planned reception could also change what needs removal, so the current design wins over the original demolition list after authorised review.

Agree a fresh scope and sequence

The receiving contractor’s needs, current access and unresolved conditions determine what can be assessed next. A replacement enquiry does not promise emergency mobilisation or acceptance of the previous programme.

Request a TrueNorth assessment with completed and remaining areas, the authorised project contact and the next trade. Our office strip-out service describes the ordinary package; changing a scope before booking explains how to keep the revised instruction identifiable.

Explain your project your way

Use the short enquiry or the optional three-step planner. You can review the summary and leave uncertain details for assessment. Neither form accepts attachments.
