Floor removal before subfloor and joist repairs
Removing a floor covering, exposing subfloor panels and altering structural framing are different tasks. When a repair is planned, the responsible designer or repair contractor should define the access needed before ordinary demolition is booked. A soft or uneven floor is not enough information to choose the removal depth.

Compare three layers
| Layer | Question to settle |
|---|---|
| Visible covering | Does the repair need this finish removed, and where does it stop? |
| Subfloor assembly | What specifically needs opening under the reviewed repair plan? |
| Joists or other supporting structure | Who designs and performs the structural repair? |
TrueNorth’s ordinary interior-removal assessment does not offer joist diagnosis or replacement. Any proposal beyond established finish removal needs its own scope review rather than being assumed from the word floor.
Connect access above with the room below
The repair team may need information from one side of the assembly or both. Let that team establish the access arrangement; do not choose a ceiling opening or remove boards as a DIY investigation for the enquiry.
Map cabinets, partitions and fixtures crossing the proposed area. A covering may continue beneath units that the owner wants to keep. The floor-under-cabinets guide explains that retained boundary, while unknown floor layers helps describe missing material information honestly.
An illustrative repair-led package
A builder specifies assessment of a named floor area in an upstairs room, with the adjoining landing retained. The repair design still needs to resolve access around a fitted cupboard and whether any ceiling work below is necessary.
The removal enquiry can identify the known finish area and those unresolved access questions separately. It should not authorise wider panel or framing removal just because the visible flooring is coming out.
Define the handoff to the repair contractor
Ask who inspects the exposed condition, who decides if the opening changes and who provides temporary arrangements, repairs and new flooring. A removal contractor should not have to infer those responsibilities after the surface is gone.
Request an assessment with the affected rooms and the repair team’s requirements. Use interior demolition for the ordinary removal contribution, keeping structural work and the final floor installation explicitly separate.
Explain your project your way
Use the short enquiry or the optional three-step planner. You can review the summary and leave uncertain details for assessment. Neither form accepts attachments.
