Whole-house interior removal for a substantial renovation
A whole-house gut should still have a room-by-room boundary. Keeping the building while removing its interiors raises questions at stairs, exterior walls, bathrooms and continuous finishes. The builder needs a description of what it will receive, not simply a house described as empty.

Connect the floors in one removal map
Start with the proposed renovation and mark what remains on each level. Then follow the shared elements between them: stairs, service routes and finishes that cross room thresholds. A room list can miss those connections.
| Area | Define the retained element | Identify the receiving question |
|---|---|---|
| Main floor | Structure and any selected rooms | Which finish layers need to be exposed for the new layout? |
| Upper floor | Stairs and reviewed partitions | What is the access arrangement while surrounding finishes change? |
| Bathrooms | Services or assemblies specifically retained | Who sets the removal depth and later rebuilding work? |
| Exterior-wall interiors | Retained building envelope as designed | Which linings leave, and who assesses what is exposed? |
This is an illustrative planning map, not a removal method. The appropriate professionals establish structural, service and material requirements.
Compare two receiving states
One renovation might remove selected room finishes while keeping sound interiors elsewhere. Another might require a wider retained-shell strip to expose assemblies for the builder’s inspection. Specify those states by area; do not treat down to framing as permission to remove every component that conceals a frame.
The existing partial-versus-full guide helps make the initial choice. A whole-house assessment then has to reconcile the choice across floors and at the retained elements.
Keep access and reconstruction visible
Stairs may be both a retained feature and the route for material removal. Service changes can affect rooms beyond the immediate work. The project team needs to determine the workable sequence and any occupation arrangements. A retained room alone is not a promise that the home remains usable.
Repairs, new services, insulation and installation follow the agreed demolition endpoint. Assign their inspection and acceptance responsibilities before describing the house as ready for rebuilding.
Make one coherent enquiry
Describe the renovation to TrueNorth, including floors involved, retained rooms, stairs and the receiving builder. The interior-demolition service is the starting point. If energy work drives the removal, the retrofit guide helps separate assembly access from an unnecessary whole-house gut.
Explain your project your way
Use the short enquiry or the optional three-step planner. You can review the summary and leave uncertain details for assessment. Neither form accepts attachments.
