Yard and structures

What happens to the door when a raised deck is removed?

A deck can be part of the route between the house and yard. Before removal, identify any door that opens onto it and how that opening will be managed afterwards. The new landscape may not immediately replace the old access.

Separate the decisions

Discuss the transition with your builder or designer. Temporary protection, replacement steps or another access arrangement may be needed, but the appropriate solution depends on the property. Do not assume closing the door informally is an adequate plan.

What to explain next

Describe the intended final arrangement and the period between demolition and replacement work. Ask who is responsible for the retained opening during that interval. This is a separate decision from the deck’s attachment to the wall or the removal of its footings.

Explore deck, fence and outdoor structure removal or ask about your own project.

Put the uncertainty into words

“The patio door opens onto the raised deck. The new stairs are part of a later contract, so we need the doorway condition agreed before the deck leaves.”

  • Which doors depend on the deck?
  • What replaces that access and when?
  • Who confirms the interim protection?

Choose your next step

Use the short enquiry, or organise what you know in the optional three-step planner. You can leave uncertain details for assessment. The form does not accept attachments.
