Concrete and debris decisions
York renovation debris: household and business receiving routes
Before choosing a disposal route, explain what the material is and who generated it. A home address does not by itself make every load household waste. A resident’s self-haul trip, a contractor’s collection and a specialist material route need different checks.

Start with the current Elgin Mills rules
York Region’s Elgin Mills Community Environmental Centre page describes accepted York-generated waste for residents and requires proof of residency. Check its current item list and vehicle conditions before travelling.
Residential household hazardous waste has its own acceptance conditions. Industrial waste and hazardous waste from commercial, institutional or industrial sources are listed as not accepted. The page also lists a specific small-business refrigerated-appliance category with a CFC-removal sticker; that does not create general business-waste eligibility. Concrete, drywall and untreated wood appear in the accepted-material information, subject to the facility’s conditions.
The linked facility page is the authority for current requirements. This guide does not reproduce disposal prices or guarantee acceptance of an individual load.
Choose the next question
| Your situation | Next step |
|---|---|
| Resident with identified material | Check the actual item, origin and trip conditions with the receiving facility |
| Ordinary debris needing collection | Ask the collection contractor to assess the material and destination |
| Business, suspect or specially regulated material | Establish the appropriate receiving or specialist route before mixing it into a load |
If the material is unidentified, keep that uncertainty visible. Do not break, scrape or combine it simply to make collection easier.
A plain-language enquiry example
“We have detached renovation debris at our Richmond Hill home. Some came from our own clearout and some was left by a contractor. We know there is wood, but the other material has not been identified. Please assess what ordinary collection can include.”
This is an illustrative enquiry, not an accepted load. It gives the contractor a useful starting point without claiming the depot will receive everything. The loose-junk versus fixed-removal guide also helps separate collection from demolition still to be done.
Ask about an assessed collection
TrueNorth’s junk and debris service is the route for an ordinary collection enquiry. Describe the materials and their origin in text; attachments are not accepted. Hazardous-material treatment or a guaranteed recycling outcome is not implied by a collection request.
Explain your project your way
Use the short enquiry or the optional three-step planner. You can review the summary and leave uncertain details for assessment. Neither form accepts attachments.
