Yard and structures

Is this a garage-only job or removal of part of the house?

A detached garage enquiry should become a different assessment when the structure connects to the house. A shared roof, enclosed passage or later addition can change the questions even when everyone calls the space “the garage”.

Separate the decisions

Describe the physical relationship rather than deciding from the building’s name. Look from safe accessible positions and mention visible connections. Do not remove cladding or enter a deteriorated roof space to prove the structures are separate.

What to explain next

If any connection is uncertain, ask for it to be reviewed before requesting a garage-only scope. Removal of a connected part can require design and protection decisions for the retained house. The enquiry should not imply that a detached-garage method applies to an attached addition.

Put the uncertainty into words

“The garage has its own outer walls, but a covered room joins it to the house. We want the garage gone and need the connection assessed before defining the boundary.”

  • Are there shared or connecting elements?
  • What part of the house must remain?
  • Is the connection documented or still unknown?

Choose your next step

Use the short enquiry, or organise what you know in the optional three-step planner. You can leave uncertain details for assessment. The form does not accept attachments.
