Inside the home

What should I explain about a doorway I want widened?

Describe the access problem rather than specifying how much wall to cut away. A wider doorway can involve the wall, door, services and surrounding finishes. A design review may be needed before the removal boundary can be determined.

Separate the decisions

If the aim is easier movement through the home, explain the route and the space on both sides of the opening. The opening alone may not resolve the difficulty. You do not need to include medical information in an online enquiry to explain an access need.

What to explain next

Ask a qualified designer to establish the appropriate change and confirm permit requirements. TrueNorth can then assess the removal portion. Keep the request separate from a promise that the completed room will meet a particular accessibility standard or suit every device.

Put the uncertainty into words

“The bathroom doorway is difficult to pass through. We need the route and proposed opening reviewed before the removal work is specified.”

  • What movement or route is difficult?
  • Has the proposed alteration been designed?
  • Which surrounding finishes should remain?

Choose your next step

Use the short enquiry, or organise what you know in the optional three-step planner. You can leave uncertain details for assessment. The form does not accept attachments.

Plan this scope

Follow the bathroom route

In an illustrative bathroom renovation, the doorway is only one part of the access problem: a retained vanity faces the opening and the hall changes direction beside it. Ask the designer to review the connected route and affected services before specifying removal. This is not a dimensional accessibility standard. The connected-home guide explains how to compare several rooms without making the whole home a strip-out by default.
