Should I clear the basement before choosing its new layout?

Clear loose belongings if that is useful, but do not assume every existing partition or finish should be removed before the design is considered. The future layout may reuse some areas and require review of others.

Separate the decisions

A basement can contain service equipment, access panels and routes that the next design must accommodate. Describe the intended rooms and any parts you are unsure about. Converting a space for a different use can raise questions beyond finish removal; the City and designer should address those requirements.

What to explain next

Distinguish a contents clearout from an interior strip-out in the enquiry. If you want to see more of the space before deciding, ask what assessment is appropriate rather than starting exploratory removal yourself. Keep uncertain walls and services out of a definite removal list.

Put the uncertainty into words

“We want to reorganise the basement but have not chosen the rooms. Contents can leave now; partition removal should wait for the layout review.”

  • Is this a contents clearout or fixed-material removal?
  • Which services need access in the new layout?
  • What design decisions are unresolved?

Choose your next step

Use the short enquiry, or organise what you know in the optional three-step planner. You can leave uncertain details for assessment. The form does not accept attachments.
