Inside the home

What if the basement stairs are also part of the renovation?

Flag the stairs early if they are both a removal item and the route for taking other material out. The contractor and designer need to consider access and the replacement arrangement together. An ordinary basement strip-out does not automatically include removing its stairs.

Separate the decisions

Explain whether another entrance exists and whether it is usable for the proposed work. Do not infer that a window or small hatch can replace the stair route. Changing stairs can also affect how people enter or leave retained areas, so a temporary arrangement requires professional review.

What to explain next

Keep stair removal conditional until the sequence and responsibilities are agreed. In your first message, identify what must leave the basement and the proposed stair change. Ask who will confirm safe access between removal and reconstruction rather than prescribing an order yourself.

Put the uncertainty into words

“The basement finishes and stairs are both being redesigned. The stairs are currently the only normal access, so their removal needs to be coordinated with the rest of the work.”

  • Are stairs included in the removal request?
  • What other access actually exists?
  • Who confirms access during the transition?

Choose your next step
