Inside the home

Can the backsplash come off while the kitchen stays?

A backsplash-only enquiry should identify the surrounding items that must remain: countertop, cabinets, outlets and adjacent wall finish. Removing tile can affect its backing, so “tile only” should not be treated as a promise that the surface underneath will be ready to decorate.

Separate the decisions

Describe where the backsplash ends and whether the new finish covers the same area. A shorter replacement can expose damage beyond its edge. Ask the finishing contractor what condition they need before the demolition limit is agreed.

What to explain next

Photographs can help explain the junctions during follow-up, but do not pry off a tile to discover the layers. Material concerns should be assessed before disturbance. The useful first message identifies the retained kitchen and the next finish rather than prescribing a tool or removal method.

Put the uncertainty into words

“We are keeping the cabinets and counter. The new backsplash will be lower than the old one, so the upper wall will need a separately agreed repair.”

  • What stays directly beside the tile?
  • Will the new finish cover the same area?
  • Who will assess and repair the backing?

Choose your next step

Use the short enquiry, or organise what you know in the optional three-step planner. You can leave uncertain details for assessment. The form does not accept attachments.
