Why discuss the new condo floor before removing the old one?

The replacement floor and the building’s requirements can influence what should be removed. Ask the property manager about applicable flooring rules before assuming the old assembly can be replaced with any product you prefer.

Separate the decisions

The removal contractor needs a defined endpoint, while the flooring installer needs an assembly acceptable for the building. Neither should have to guess from the visible finish alone. Do not treat the fact that a neighbour installed a similar floor as approval for your unit.

What to explain next

Obtain the building’s requirements and the installer’s proposed assembly, then identify the layers to remove or retain. If the existing layers are unknown, keep that as an assessment item. The enquiry can proceed with those limitations clearly stated; work should not be authorised on an assumed approval.

Put the uncertainty into words

“We want to replace carpet with another finish. The manager is confirming the building’s flooring requirements, so the underlayer decision is still open.”

  • What does the building require for replacement flooring?
  • Has the installer proposed an assembly?
  • Which existing layers still need assessment?

Choose your next step

Use the short enquiry, or organise what you know in the optional three-step planner. You can leave uncertain details for assessment. The form does not accept attachments.
